How does it work?

When you call us, we first need to understand your situation. This includes what debts you have but also your available income and living expenses.

Depending on what you tell us, we can outline some options for you. Next to the support we offer, we can also connect you with a financial counsellor, other community organisations or your bank’s hardship team, depending on who is best able to help you. Ultimately, the choice is completely yours!

If you decide that you would be best supported by our service, we will start outlining a repayment plan for you.

What is a repayment plan?

A repayment plan is an agreement between you and your creditors to pay off your debt with a more affordable amount.

We look at your income and expenses, then discuss with you how much you can afford to pay towards your debt. With your permission, we will then contact all of your creditors and negotiate the changes to your repayment amount. We realise that most people want to pay their debt back, but just cannot afford their regular payments with high-interest rates, fees and extra charges. We try to reduce your repayment to an amount you can afford within a reasonable timeframe.

We understand that your situation may change in the future. If things become more difficult for you, you can always call us and request an adjustment to your repayment plan. Or if things improve and you prefer to repay your debt faster, that is possible as well.

Why should I choose Way Forward?

We are a not-for-profit organisation. This means that we do not want to make a profit with the services we provide. We only exist to support clients who are unable to repay their debt. We will always act in your best interest.

We are supported by other community organisations such as Financial Counselling Australia. This means that we can offer you support through our partners. If we learn that you need help with other aspects in your life, we can connect you to one of our partners and make sure you get the support you need.

While we are completely independent, the Australian Banking Association and the largest banks and creditors in Australia support our approach to helping people in financial stress. That means we can negotiate with your creditors and get better agreements for you.

Can I get help from you?

During our pilot phase, our clients can only be referred in by our members, which include the Big Four Banks. Speak to your creditors to see if they are a member of our service.

How we help you will depend on your situation. There are many organisations in Australia providing great support to people in financial stress. We want to make sure that we provide a service that is unique in that it is free, we act in your best interest and is a not for profit organisation. Our focus is helping people who have unsecured debt (credit cards, personal loans, payday loans, etc.) with multiple creditors. We can set up a repayment plan for you or if it is identified that another organisation can help you better, we will connect you to the right support services.
