Gambling – a National Shame.

Australia has the unwanted distinction of recording the highest gambling losses per person in the world.

Australians lose an estimated $32 billion every year to gambling, an average of around $1,500 per person. While gambling is often promoted as entertainment, its impact extends far beyond the individual, affecting families, relationships and communities across the country.

Around three in five Australians gamble each year, with one in five gambling at levels considered risky. Behind these figures are real people experiencing financial hardship, emotional distress and debt that can take years to recover from.

Young Australians are increasingly being exposed to gambling through advertising, sport, online platforms and mobile technology, making gambling more accessible than ever before. What may begin as occasional betting can quickly become a harmful cycle of chasing losses, borrowing money and falling deeper into financial stress.

The consequences reach well beyond finances. Gambling harm is linked to relationship breakdowns, family conflict, domestic violence, declining mental health and social isolation. Children often bear the hidden cost, missing out on everyday essentials, school activities, sporting opportunities and the stability they need to thrive. Families are frequently left carrying not only financial burdens but also feelings of shame, secrecy and hopelessness.

These impacts place increasing pressure on families, communities and frontline support services. For many Australians, seeking financial stress support or help with debt in Australia is the first step towards regaining control before debt becomes unmanageable.

The ABC documentary series Going for Broke, presented by Shaun Micallef, explores how gambling has evolved from a casual pastime into a highly engineered industry designed to maximise engagement and raises important questions about its detrimental impact.
